Bisabolol

Bisabolol is the primary constituent of German Chamomile essential oil however, another good source is the Candeia tree. It is soothing and calming and helps other ingredients that it is combined with to penetrate the skin better.

A clear, colourless liquid with a weak, slightly floral aroma.

It is naturally sourced from a Brazilian tree called the Candeia Tree.

Inci:Bisabolol

According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Database (Cosing), the functions of Bisabolol are:

Masking, Skin Conditioning, Soothing

Skin Care
Excellent for calming down inflammation whether it be from acne, rosacea, sunburn or psoriasis type skin conditions.

A good choice for sensitive skin products where it protects from daily stress and the effects of pollution and gives a smoothness to the skin.

Bisabolol inhibits the enzymes in the skin that are responsible for breaking down collagen. Therefore, it can be considered as a pro collagen support product because it also stimulates collagen production. This will help to fade fine lines and wrinkles.

Hyperpigmentation is reduced as Bisabolol helps to inhibit melanin production which is responsible for age spots.

Bisabolol increases the skin penetration of other cosmetic ingredients such as antioxidants and other skin toners.

Use in baby products like nappy creams and cleansing gels. Be aware that the ability to increase skin penetration of other cosmetic materials is important to note with baby products as it could enable essential oils to be absorbed faster. Consider reducing the amount of essential oils used.

Add to aftersun gels and light lotions to calm down any redness in the skin.

As an antibacterial and antifungal agent, it makes an ideal choice to add to foot creams, gels and balms.

Soothing to itchy skin such as eczema or psoriasis prone skin or any dermatitis type skin problem.

Superb in an after shave lotion to calm the razor rash and leave the skin feeling smooth. It stimulates healing and speeds up the healing process of any nicks and cuts.

Add to lip gloss to calm irritation and give an amazing shine to the lips.

Acne prone skin will benefit from Bisabolol and it can be used in oil based serums, gels, creams and lotions.

Very effective in body scrubs where it will address and potential irritation caused by the exfoliating action.

An ideal addition to nail and cuticle formulations where it will help the other ingredients to penetrate deeper into the nail bed and leave the nail with a healthy, shine.

Whilst many people do not want a shiny face when using products, Bisabolol is great in a leg lotion as it gives a natural sheen to the skin.

Hair Care

Moisturises a dry scalp and helps any anti dandruff ingredients to be absorbed better.

When used in a hair pack, it will calm down an irritated scalp after chemical processing of the hair.

Very calming for a dry, itchy scalp and can be added to shampoos and conditioner.

When used at 1% or 2%, it imparts a great shine to the hair.

Other
It is oil soluble so you can add it to oils, serums and ready-made products. The percentage used is very small, only 0.2 – 2% is needed.

Use in toothpaste as an antibacterial and to soothe irritated gums.

Suggested Blends
Combine with Algaktiv Zen in sensitive and anti stress skin care products.

For sensitive or irritated skin you can also use Bisabolol together with other Chamomile products such as essential oil and flower water. Comfrey Glycerol Extract and Comfrey Oil will also be beneficial. Consider also using Allantoin, Aloe Vera Concentrate and Cosmetic Prebiotic.

For shiny hair oil blends add Bisabolol to Camelina, Jojoba and Calendula oils.

Cautions/Contraindications
None, but be aware that when it increases the skin absorption of other materials used, that this may not be what is wanted with a product like a nappy rash balm.
