History of Coriander

The use of coriander, traditionally thought to bestow immortality and protection, is as old as civilization. Indigenous to the Holy Land, coriander seeds from the pre-pottery Neolithic period have been found in the Nahal Hemel Cave in Israel. Coriander has also been discovered in the tombs of Tutankhamen and Ramses II, suggesting that the plant was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians. They believed it was the secret to happiness and added it to wine to stimulate the passions. It is thought that coriander seeds were prized in Greece from at least the second millennium BC. The seeds have also been used in Ayurveda to promote a feeling of peace and invigorate creative energy.
